My Views
Design
Inspiron 1420 design is not at all flashy like some other latest offerings from Dell. That does not undermine the sense of style of a 1420 however. For a notebook of its cost the style is decent enough. The main attraction however is the strength and sturdiness of the machine that has been a part of its predecessors.
The hinge mechanism is very strong and it holds the lid nicely closed. This makes up for the absence of latch in the lid usually use to hold it close. The screen is
strong enough not to exhibit any flex. The custom colors of the machine give it an aura of sophistication ad style.
Performance
Dell inspiron 1420 houses core 2 duo processors which are powerful to give performance to match upto your expectations and more. The optional nVidia graphics card can make this
machine a superb gaming laptop with precise pictures and good video quality.
Screen
Some users have reported graininess in the WXGA 1280X800 display. However the higher resolution screens are fairly good with great contrast. Viewing angle is good both
horizontally and vertically. If you intend to use the machine for extensive gaming and graphic related usage then its advisable to go for WXGA+ 1440X900 screen.
Keyboard
The keyboard on a Dell Inspiron 1420 is full sized. There is rarely any sagging and the keys are very comfortable to fingers with nice cushion. The keys are very responsive.
Touchpad is large, comfortable and responsive as well. Apart from the keyboard and touch pad the inspiwron 1420 contains media buttons at the top of the keyboard. YOu will
find a couple of those below the speaker as well.
Audio
The quality of the inbuilt audio system is nothing to boast about. The clarity is feeble and thus external audio will be needed to enjoy movies or games in particular.
Heat/Noise
The large hint sink takes good care of the heat generated by the machine. The fan also contributes to keeping the temperature low without much of sound. The heat felt by
the user is within acceptable limits. The noise level generated is in the comfort zone as well.
Battery
The life for the standard 6 cell battery is roughly about 2 hours. Opting for the 9 cell battery could give you an extra hour of performance under optimized condition.
Conclusion
Dell Inspiron 1420 gives good value for money.
