Now, let me introduce you to the dell latitude notebook family members.

Dell latitude notebook models we discuss here are D410, D420, D520, D620, D820, X1, 131L and 120L.

Latitude D410

Latitude D410 is aimed at frequent travelers who would like to have the best of mobility without compromising on performance what so ever. Starting weight of 3.8 lbs and a thickness of 1.25" clearly indicate how much of an ease it is to travel with the laptop.

Latitude D410 comes with a compact 12.1” display, since compact size is a priority for travelers. However the slim looks should not mislead you when it comes to the processing prowess of this dell latitude notebook. This model supports windows XP operating system. 3 USB 2.0 ports, VGA, Infrared, Gigabit Ethernet Modem, PCMCIA slots and Bluetooth option ensure that connectivity is not compromised in pursuit of a sleeker and lighter laptop. The storage capacity of the internal hard drive is 80 GB where as the optimum limit for the DDR2 SDRAM memory is 2 GB. Security measures include an integrated smart card reader.

Latitude D420

This is an awesome combination of mobility, ultra light weight, long battery life and connectivity. The memory options are pretty limited in this model as it can go up to 1.5GB of DDR2 SDRAM. Same is the story with internal hard drive storage space which has an upper limit of 60GB. D420 is a relatively small dell latitude notebook with 12.1" standard display. It’s powered with Intel processor (Intel core duo or solo processor).

The most important thing about Latitude D420 is its battery life. A high battery life makes it a traveler’s delight. It is compatible with Windows XP operating system. Weighing as low as 3 lbs, this 1" thick machine displays a wide range of connectivity. The ports include Docking connector, USB 2.0, powered USB, VGA, Infrared port, SD card slot etc. The security arrangements include an integrated smart card reader and finger print reader. This is ideal for frequent travelers who want a slim, ultra light laptop for regular business stuff. The longer battery life accentuates it’s usefulness for travelers. However if you are looking for a laptop to watch movies while traveling, high end gaming or running large applications like modeling software then you better look for some other machine.

Latitude D520

D520 is the dell latitude notebook aimed at mobile business people who want a robust system for a lesser price. This laptop may not be very good for your multimedia applications, but will promptly cater to the common business needs. You can go up to 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM memory and 120GB internal hard drive storage space. It comes with standard 14.1” or 15” display. It comes either with an Intel Core Duo or Intel Core 2 Duo processor and supports Windows XP operating system. It weighs a minimum of 5.24lbs and is 1.4” thick. Security features are not as robust as some of the other latitude models. It comes equipped with Serial port, docking connector, VGA, 4 USB, infrared port and an integrated microphone among others. It is made for budget conscious professionals looking for a handy economical laptop with good features for corporate use.

Latitude D620

Latitude D620 is a trade off between performance, technology and cost. It can be customized to have a maximum of 4GB DDR2 SDRAM memory and up to 100GB internal hard-drive. This comes with a 14.1” wide-screen display. Though the graphics are good for normal multimedia usage, it’s not really built to satisfy graphics designers, animators and other such professionals. Equipped with an Intel Core or Intel Core 2 Duo processor, D620 dell latitude notebook weighs a minimum of 4.37 lbs and is 1.26” thick. It supports the Windows XP operating system. It has some cool security features like integrated smart card reader and the optional finger print reader.

This is ideal for multimedia usage.

It’s better to watch a movie on a wide screen with good graphics…isn’t it?

Latitude D820

Dell latitude notebook that we know as D820 is one extreme machine in the latitude family aimed at professionals like me whose work deals with a lot of graphics. Flexible memory options which can go up to 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM are a boon. Internal hard drive storage facility can be as high as 120GB. This model has a 15.4” wide-screen display. As far as the processor is concerned, you can choose between Intel Core and Intel Core 2 Duo. It comes with Windows XP professional and Windows XP home edition operating systems. Latitude D820 is a bit bulky when compared to other latitudes, but then for the work it does, a starting weight of 6 lbs is good enough. It’s 1.39” thick and comes with far too many graphic options. Your choices are

  • 256MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M.
  • 512MB NVIDIA Quadro NVS 120M.
  • Intel graphics Media Accelerator 950).
In a Latitude D820 you will find Serial, USB 2.0, infrared and AC power ports along with a host of others. Like many Dell latitude notebook models D820 comes with good security system in place. It has an integrated smart card reader and a finger print reader. As I said earlier this is a great notebook for graphics demanding work like CAD, 3D Modeling, Meshing etc.

Latitude X1

X1 is a Dell Latitude notebook that meets the standards of the corporate world in terms of performance and features. This laptop is aimed at frequently traveling people in need of a high degree of mobility. It weighs around 2.5 lbs with a 3 cell battery and is about 0.98” thick. Latitude X1 supports up to 1280 MB of DDR2 SDRAM memory and has internal hard drive capacity of 60GB. Equipped with Intel Pentium M ULV Processor and a 12.1” wide screen display, this is just right for the frequent traveler segment. Ports included among others are 2 USB 2.0, Ethernet, Modem and Audio.

One inconvenience you could face with this model is it’s incompatibility with the other D-Family models. It has no docking options at all. But then, if you travel very frequently, compromising with the docking options should be a no-brainer. However if D-Family compatibility and docking options are your concern then it’s best to overlook this model.

Latitude 131L

Dell Latitude 131L is targeted at the business class users who would appreciate a wide screen model at a competitive price, with features adequate to run their business applications.

Memory capacity of 2 GB in Latitude 131L is good enough for a laptop aimed at the business class. It can accommodate up to 120GB of data in the internal hard drive. 15.4” wide screen display is one attractive feature in this Dell Latitude notebook. As far as processor is concerned you can choose between AMD Sempron processors and AMD Turion Mobile Technology. In case you feel there is a need for multitasking in your business environment then go for AMD Turion 64X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology. 131L Dell Latitude notebook comes with Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition and the 1.42” thick machine weighs around 6.17 lbs. As a security measure this laptop consists of steel-reinforced cable lock slot.

Latitude 120L

Dell Latitude 120L is certainly not for any specific demanding category of users like people in need of high quality graphics. It is a basic laptop with wide screen display that caters to normal office requirements such as running small business applications. It’s good enough for accessing internet, e-mailing and word processing.

Latitude 120L can be equipped with up to 2GB DDR2 SDRAM and internal hard drive storage space of 100GB. This is a basic model in the dell latitude notebook lineup and has the prowess to carry out day to day office jobs. Latitude 120L is powered by Intel Pentium M or Intel Celeron M processors…you do have options to customize. It features a wide aspect ratio screen. Screens are available in two different sizes viz. 14.1” and 15.4”. This model is compatible with Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition and Windows Vista. A Dell Latitude 120L weighs around 6.29lbs and is about 1.41” thick. Ports include 3USB 2.0, VGA, Ethernet, modem and Express Card 54mm among others.
