Laptop batteries are perishable products. They deteriorate soon after they leave the production unit where they are manufactured. But then there are certain simple things which you can do to insure a better life for your battery. For that you must equip yourself with the understanding of the battery chemistry, their charging and maintenance methods and your laptop power requirements.

A laptop battery does not really come cheap. So a wise informed decision helps in getting the value for your money while purchasing a battery. Some of the aspects which you must understand for a good laptop battery selection are

Main, CMOS and RAM batteries

The main battery is the battery pack which allows a laptop to operate independently of an AC power source. Also known as the power battery these are designed to work for a certain time period.

CMOS batteries perform a very specific task. When the laptop is turned off, the CMOS battery maintains the time and date. The battery saves the CMOS set-up configuration, which promotes efficient rebooting of the system when it's restarted. These laptop batteries are also called Real Time Clock batteries or simply internal batteries. These batteries are usually in the 3 to 7.2 volt range.

CMOS batteries generally last for two to three years. However, the less you use your laptop the faster the CMOS battery runs out. If the laptop has been unused for an extended length of time then it's advisable to change the battery. It's better to replace the CMOS laptop battery once a year.

RAM battery dedicatedly backs up RAM functions, when the laptop is temporarily shut off. This feature allows changing the main battery pack without loosing the current applications. Also known as bridge batteries these last for around 2-3 years.
